Card component case study

Card component specifications, built from scratch with alignment from product designers and engineers.

Where design started

Cards display content and actions about a single subject.

I was looking to replace the following components with a more flexible Card component:

Specifications

Specifications are final before Engineering starts writing code. Below are select samples, and more images are available.

Card anatomy specification: container, top section, top section divider, body, bottom section divider, and bottom section, with border, radius, and stroke color token values
Card behavior specification: a non-actionable card where tab moves through its interactive elements, an actionable card where the whole card receives focus, and a selectable card with tab to focus and enter to select

Explorations

Explorations are unpolished and meant for feedback. Below are select samples, and more images are available.

Card content exploration: simple cards, a card with header and body, a card with body and footer showing plan usage, a signup form card, and nested cards
Card style variants (elevated, outline, filled) shown across default, hover, focus, disabled, and selected states
Card group exploration: vertically stacked cards inside a tabbed recommendations panel, and horizontally stacked template cards in a scrolling Popular templates panel with filters

More detailed images and a Figma component are available. I'd be glad to walk through the process.
